Considering jams and the often risky driving style of one’s fellow citizens, travelling by car can often be nerve-racking. So why not use the train and relax? Instead of concentrating on the traffic around you, you can watch the countryside or read a good book.
The state owned monopolist running the German railway is called Deutsche Bahn AG, German national railway. On their way to other major cities, comfortable higher speed ICE trains pass through the metropolises of the Ruhr Area. However, regional trains are rather slow and oftentimes delays demand much patience from the travelers.
Over the last years regular price increases have made travelling by train quite expensive. So watch out for special offers like regional tickets, e.g. the NRW Tickets which enable you to travel throughout North Rhine-Westphalia at a very reasonable price. You may either purchase your tickets on the internet or directly go to the Deutsch Bahn ticket office at your local railway station.
