53 cities and communities are playing host to a year of special events when the title “European Capital of Culture” is given to the Ruhr Area throughout 2010. Giving the industrial heart of Germany the opportunity to showcase its rich cultural development, this esteemed recognition is placing “Essen for the Ruhr” on the map alongside other past culture capital winners such as Athens, Paris, Dublin, Madrid and Stockholm.
Remarkable for its cultural diversity, integration and urbanism, the Ruhr area has evolved immensely since the days when coal mines, steel plants and coke ovens contributed to the economic weight of the region. Today, this expansive conurbation is renowned for a unique cultural landscape that embraces both its industrial past and urban present.
2010 offers a celebration of change and development in the Ruhr area. Art centres, museums, theatres, artists as well as businesses, towns and communities are working together to promote this dynamic urban metropolis and its motto “Change through Culture – Culture through Change.”
Over 2000 events including festivals, street parties, exhibitions and creative projects run throughout the entire year in the region. The opening ceremony took place on the 9th of January.
